Mission
The purpose of PubZilla is to support cost-effective transactions for the serials back volume/issue trade. Guided by the needs of our customers, the usefulness of printed serials, the need to improve trading methods, the benefits of auction software technology, and our commitment to high quality service, PubZilla offers an efficient, dynamic pricing marketplace for the serials back volume/issue trade.
Market Needs
We understand the research value of print serials, and why concerns about archiving, credibility, custom, ownership and usability will keep print serials in need far into the future. We know the difficulty in collecting serial back volumes/issues caused by a fragmented market. We believe PubZilla will enable sellers/buyers, and donors/recipients to come together in an unrestrained, evolving and cost-effective marketplace.
Ten reasons why libraries still need periodicals in print format:
1. Electronic format is not available.
2. Electronic format is too expensive.
3. Print format preferred by library users.
4. Technology and expertise to manage electronic format is not established.
5. Provisions for archiving electronic format are not established.
6. Benefit/Cost value is higher for the print format of a specific title.
7. Ownership property rights for print format, especially expensive titles.
8. License restrictions on filling interlibrary loans for electronic format.
9. Replace missing issues/volumes and complete gaps in print format collection.
10. Acquire periodical issue in print format to avoid copyright royalty fees when fair use guidelines for interlibrary loan have been exceeded.
Comprehensive Selection
The backbone of PubZilla is the National Library of Medicine SERFILE database. The Listing Tool used within PubZilla to list medical journals is derived completely from all serial bibliographic records in the U.S. National Library of Medicine's SERFILE database. The Listing Tool includes the SERFILE backfile of over 120,000 records and is updated monthly with 1,000-3,000 records per month from the SERFILE monthly distribution.
Standardized Information
We recognize the need for accuracy and consistency when working with medical literature. PubZilla has strict quality control built in to maintain accurate description and systematic organization for all auction items. The principles of library subject and descriptive cataloging are at the heart of PubZilla. The item listing process uses controlled bibliographic information, takes the hassle and guesswork out of listing items and is fast and accurate! For example, the first step to list an item in PubZilla is to look up the catalog record that matches the item. This required step keeps the items listed in PubZilla accurate and organized.
Ease of Use
Our 'list a similar item' option for listing auction items enables you to quickly list separate volumes or issues for the same periodical title. Our mulitple re-listing tool makes re-listing auction items a snap! We make communicating with buyers easy by notifying your winning bidders for you in one email for all lots won that day, automatically!
Global Reach
The Internet makes the market reach for your periodical back issues listed on PubZilla limited only by your own terms for shipping and payment. A free storefront/microsite web page is provided for all members where their listed auction items are displayed and organized by category. This feature offers a valuable marketing tool for members, especially libraries that are seeking fundraising and e-commerce opportunities. The microsite can also serve as a type of special publication, catalog, and index prepared by libraries.
