Members Area:
The Members Area includes functions for both selling and buying, and a link for updating your membership information. The
functions for selling are found in the 'Sellers Menu' and explained below.
How to List an Auction Item:
Before you start listing your auction items, please review the tutorial on 'How to List an Auction Item' for a step by step overview of the process. The listing process here is unlike other auction sites because it uses controlled bibliographic information to keep the listings accurate and organized. This innovation takes the hassle and guesswork out of listing items and makes the process fast! Auction items may be listed individually, or multiple auctions may be uploaded.
Each auction item contains the following information:
Category:
The Category is controlled information that is made available through
our system. The Auction categories used to organize medical journals
are the Medical Subject Headings used to describe the titles currently
indexed in the U.S. National Library of Medicine's Index Medicus,
also known as "Journal Descriptors." Medical Journals listed in the
Auction for which a Journal Descriptor has not been assigned by NLM
will be temporarily listed under the "Miscellany" Category until a
Journal Descriptor is assigned by NLM.
Title:
The Title and related bibliogaphic data is controlled information made
available through our system. This information for all auction items
is produced by the Auction's Journal Listing Tool. The Listing Tool
is derived completely from all serial bibliographic records in the
U.S. National Library of Medicine's SERFILE database. Search the
Listing Tool of over 120,000 unique medical journal titles published
in a wide variety of languages to find the medical journal title that
matches your item. The Listing Tool is easy to use, saves time for
the seller, assures accuracy in listing items, and keeps the Auction
organized and easy to search. Listing your medical journal titles
accurately is a snap with the Listing Tool and will help attract attention for your item.
Quantity:
Either 1 or more items may be sold at the same time. Multiple quantity (Yankee
auctions) must be for the exact same item.
Description:
Your description is most important to describing your item and
answering potential questions for the buyer. HTML is acceptable.
This is where you enumerate the actual holdings (years, volumes,
and issues) you have for a Title, and describe the item's physical
condition.
It is also important to describe the physical condition of the item because
this factor affects value. Think about it, no one likes to open a package
and discover that the goods are not what were expected or in poor condition.
Please be honest with how you describe the physical condition of your items
and you will avoid causing hard feelings with your buyers. The terms below
are the most commonly used by booksellers to describe physical condition and
are suitable for describing journal auction items here as well.
- As-new -- Item is crisp, bright, appears unread, with no defects.
- Fine (F)-- Item shows slight wear, but without any defects of any kind.
- Very Good (VG)-- Item shows signs of wear, but no tears or major defects of any kind.
- Good (G)-- Item shows an average amount of wear. Some small tears or other defects may be present, but item is in reasonably good shape.
- Fair-- Item shows significant wear, may have ink marks or stamps and may have endpapers or half-title page missing. All text pages are intact.
- Poor/Reading Copy-- Item has all text pages intact but appears very worn with serious soiling, scuffing or marking.
- Ex-Library/Ex-Lib/X-Lib - Item has external and/or internal marks
identifying it as having belonged to a public, corporate or lending library.
Items from private libraries containing the former owner's signature or
bookplate are not considered Ex-Library copies.
- Binding Copy-- All pages are present and in good condition, but the binding is very loose or non-existent.
A plus and/or minus sign can be used after the term to indicate that the
condition is borderline. For example, VG+ means that the item has minor
wear, but is in such good condition it nearly qualifies as a "fine copy."
G- means that the item shows enough wear that it barely qualifies for a Good
rating.
Uploading Images:
You may upload up to 6 images with the List Item form, or link to an
image on another website by providing the complete URL to the image.
When linking make sure to use a complete URL beginning with http://.
If you aren't sure of your image URL, copy what you have typed into a
new browser window and see if your image appears. If it doesn't,
check your path and file name, as they are case sensitive in most cases. Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words!
Starting Bid:
The Starting Bid will start the bidding on an auction, and the item will be
considered sold if a bid is received for this amount, and no reserve bid
is set.
Reserve Bid:
This is optional and left blank for Non Reserve or Regular auctions.
Bids will be accepted at the Starting Bid, but must reach the Reserve
Bid to be considered sold.
Buy Price:
Not available with Yankee Auctions. This amount must be at or higher than
the Starting Bid, and if a bid reaches this amount it will end the
auction immediately and the item will be considered sold. Always use a Buy Price of $0.00 when donating periodicals with the auction site (see Donating Periodicals below).
Shipping and Payment Terms:
Boxes are provided for you to enter your Shipping and Payment Terms. HTML
is accepted here. You may also set defaults for this form in the Settings
and Messages sections of the Seller Tools menu.
Settings and Messages:
As mentioned above you may set your default Shipping and Payment terms in
the Settings and Messages section of the Seller Tools menu. You may also
add a note to buyers which is included in the bottom of the winning
bid notice. Here is where you should be including instructions further explaining your payment and shipping policies to the buyer so the transaction may be concluded swiftly.
Ending Time:
You may select a day and time your auction will end from the drop down box
on the List Item form.
Featuring and Extras:
You may increase the exposure of your auction item by Featuring the auction,
or adding bold text for display.
Saving and Starting Auctions:
Once you have completed the listing form you may start your auction immediately,
or save the auction for later. Saving the auction for later will allow you
to prepare auctions in advance. Saved auctions are accessed from the Seller
Tools menu, and may be sent to auction in groups.
When Your Auction Ends:
When your auction has ended notices are sent out to winning bidders. Notices
are sent once per day, approximately at 1 AM EST. We do this so that we can
combine multiple winners into one notification. The buyer and seller will
each receive an email with the list of auctions won, and auctions that did
not meet the reserve, and the payment instructions provided by the seller.
Relisting Auctions:
An auction may be relisted once it is over and notices have been sent. From
the Seller Tools menu choose Relist Closed Auctions. You may view your sold
and unsold auctions here, and relist in groups or individually.
Donating Periodicals:
Donating periodicals with the auction site works just like selling an auction item except for two special requirements. First, use the Buy Price option and set the price for $0.00 in order to close the auction immediately when someone bids on the item. Second, state in your Payment policy, "This item is for donation to libraries only," or whatever restrictions may apply for potential recipients. Beyond these requirements, state the terms for your Payment and Shipping policies according to your own requirements.
My Auctions:
This link from the Sellers Menu lists all the Seller's auctions that are pending, current, and closed.
Seller Tools:
This is a link from the Sellers Menu to a section with advanced features and settings that sellers can use to help them use the software better. For example, the 'Text Lists for Promotion' feature allows you to create text lists of your auction items, with URL links to the items, that you can use to promote your auction items in Newsgroups (Listservs) and email. This highly useful feature also allows you to select the specific category (Medical Subject Heading MeSH) and the order the list is sorted (price, ending time, title, item ID) when creating a text list for your auction items. Imagine the possibilities for promoting your auction items with this feature!
Promote Your Auctions:
This is a link from the Sellers Menu to suggestions on how to cost-effectively promote your auction items with our advanced software features.
Purchases/Sales Area:
The Sellers Menu in Your members area also has a very handy link called 'Purchases/Sales' where buyers
and sellers can go to view the winning bids. Copies of the email invoices
are kept there, and links are provided to make it easy for contacting the
other party. This is also the section where Feedback can be left for another
member, relating to a particular transaction.
